ANDREA MESSINEO
SAINT JULIAN PRESS POET
PILGRIMAGE
We would walk hip-deep through snow
black dog arcing over like a seal
sun catching a glassy net of iced brambles
and dazzling them into cathedral glory.
Piping cardinals and chickadees
would flit from tree to tree,
following in our train
as we trudged the quarter-mile or so
down the country lane
on a pilgrimage to the mailbox.
Few young people would understand now
(when news flows over and around us):
Why undertake such an arduous journey
just to get news of the outside world?
Why leave the warm comfort of home
on the chance that – among the bills –
would be tucked a seed catalog,
holding dreams for spring, or even
a handwritten letter from a friend?
Those were the last days, perhaps
in which it was possible
to grow up solitary.
