Heaven Laughed
The bow of the spirit-
boat swished
through
the Red River
Slid
into the
delta
Mai Ly’s soul
looked up and
watched
storm
clouds swirling
decided
to join them –
jumped
high
her boat
like a trampoline
ao
dai dress flapped when she flipped
above river dragon
felt mist on
her
face
The
Jade Emperor
joined
the aerial dance They spun
holding hands like skydivers
The wind roared
Birds chirped
A child gazed up
Wondered at the circle,
spinning top
Thought he
heard Heaven
laugh
(from Quiet Lantern, a novel in
verse)
