Ode to the Dimmest Star
by Audrey Griffin
You are the prime example of
“Don’t judge a book by its cover”
“Looks don’t matter”
and other hypocritical sayings
Brighter,
is not always
better
Who needs to be
dazzling
when you could be
honest?
You are so far away,
little star.
I would build a rocket of
doubt from others
who are so obsessed with the
false immortality of the
brightest star.
My own quiet hope for fuel,
I would jet through
galaxies only glimpsed in photographs
and luminescent spheres of gas
encircled by bracelets of asteroids
just to reach you.
Light years from now, I will
hand you these words
as reassurance that you are not
forgotten,
and I will make the journey back,
and watch out for you every night.
