Jeffrey Davis – Poet
Darkness, My Wise Little Brother
When darkness appears
outside your kitchen window
this winter bring him in
offer him a chipped cup of tea
and bring him so close
you can feel beneath
his thick coat
that hidden sorrow
known well by the nightingale
the gray wolf and other creatures
intimate with the skin of night
Hold him,
and he will tell you stories
of blind men’s dreams and groundhogs’
beds
of forgotten soldiers’ songs
and the quiet wind that sneaks
through widows’ doors
and then he will without shame
beg to ride your back into light
When you’ve fallen asleep
beside the dreaming fire
he will slip out the back,
the redolent scent of spring left
in his sneaker prints
