Through conjurings—as if that were fair, as if anyone

Hue and cry. For once I would like you to see me, 
Shorn of rumour, and I you, shorn of fantasy.
There would be no poems. Our speech might be
About common things, how thin you seem, how
 
The years that were a kind of triumph in reality
Were unkind. I can feel a lie from far off,
Having lived that larger-than-lie childhood,
But hope, hope is my weakness. For myself
 
I would lay hope aside, when the time came,
And simply walk with you, attentive to the wind
In your long hair, your words, the way my eyes
Have begun to fail in the twilight, so that I cannot
 
Be sure what I am seeing. By then I think
You would know what to do. The love was always 
There, however filled fear, or anger. These are
Last year’s words. There is nothing more to see.
