REBECCA PELKY
SAINT JULIAN PRESS POET
POEMS from — HORIZON OF THE DOG WOMAN
SPELL FOR NORTHERN GIRLS: TO MAKE SEA GLASS
At ninety degrees, you can call the wind,
but don’t let him speak; In this heat
his voice carries too much weight,
and your chest will grow thick with his words.
Instead, let the gentle push of downhill lead you
to water. On the shore, strip down and give
your body to the white noise
rhythm of her moonstruck heartbeat.
With your knees leaving prints in her
weathered sand, you can look her in the eye;
She does not demand your pride.
On a calm day, she’ll let you have her
like this, until she’s finished with you, until
her tide shifts, and she pushes and pushes you
away. But if you leave her a gift, a shard
of sharp green glass, she’ll burnish and caress it,
and someday she’ll return it, worn
to a jewel by her regard.
