POEMS from — HORIZON OF THE DOG WOMAN

WHEN THE SUN DANCES INTO THE SKY

 
​That’s how he saw it, the sunrise, 
the storyteller in buckskin who boarded the train 
in Havre, Montana, like dancing, like so much 
in life is dancing. Really, it’s how the air, 
hot or cold, eddies over tepid earth, 
and we’re all just spinning. 
            
Grass dances on the plains, a train dances 
on the tracks, and I’m just a girl standing 
on the toes of a story he told about 
Little Mouse and Buffalo, about serenading 
a life that courts the middle-distance, 
a cotillion with the living and the dead.

Rebecca Pelky was raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, surrounded by Great Lakes. She is an enrolled member of the Brothertown Indian Nation of Wisconsin, and is of Mohegan and European descent. She began publishing poems later in life than some, after spending thirteen years as a zookeeper and wildlife dietician. Rebecca is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she is a Gus T. Ridgel Fellow.
