The Trees on Prairie Road
The road sidles by under the oaks
hooking business 35 to the water and may
have come into being somewhere
in the nineteenth century after a hard-fought
tangle with coastal brush. The oaks,
they've been here longer.
It slows you down
to think about the obvious. The thirst
of trees, the dearth of fresh water. Some
thirty miles to your back, salinification
of the Aransas whooping crane habitat
is killing the blue crabs, killing, in turn,
a far too significant number of cranes,
and still there is that indeterminacy
about the manner of your own
death. Pondered, idly, in the shade
of trees that have been here longer
than all the knowledge and sensation
you've gathered in your life, as precious
to you as that is. Coastal prairie,
parceled land, plotted world.
