NEW MOTHER AGAIN

 

 

Traffic disperses

and the empty lot lets the wind

simmer. Your four-year-old

scribbles an alternating current.

You keep sneaking peeks at your infant's

hairy, adorable face, the surprise

of his eyes landing on yours.

Yet you'd give anything to sit an hour

in sulphur water, among strangers,

hearing the piped mineral spring

fall from tub to tub, cooling.

Even folded up in coach fare

would give you an essential respite.

You'd like that, leaning against the cold

window, a plastic cup of Coke

on a tray. From there you'd watch

suitcases roll like small cars being towed

to tropical destinations.
