POEMS from — Horizon of the Dog Woman

FOR THOSE WHO NEED THE TRUE STORY
 

​Look elsewhere. This is only one
truth; I am one part Indian. I am
one woman and one girl, one daughter,
 
one bruise. For truth, try the white pine, 
leaning under weight of God or wind,
its limbs spread, as if in benediction. 
                                    
Search the riverbanks for swallows
who winter in ice, who still themselves 
to frozen, and slow from stipple to thud.
 
Swim the river below the dam, where a swell 
carried away the salmon and the family of five, 
let it take you to the delta, the sweet water mouth. 
 
Let it take you through the length of a life 
that’s bound to the heart, to the heart that exhales, 
and says, yôpi,again, but makes no promises.

Rebecca Pelky was raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, surrounded by Great Lakes. She is an enrolled member of the Brothertown Indian Nation of Wisconsin, and is of Mohegan and European descent. She began publishing poems later in life than some, after spending thirteen years as a zookeeper and wildlife dietician. Rebecca is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she is a Gus T. Ridgel Fellow.
