IN THE BRIGHT WORLD DEMETER WISHES

 
all oranges were blood oranges--
the magenta-tinged skin hinting
of darker cells below, how orange
and not orange they are. The luxury 
of cultivars, of orchards and vineyards
travelling the small slope of a hill and a life
spent tending such gifts.  The cool evenings 
necessary for the trees to thrive. Now everything 
can be had, and none of it tastes good. 
Each morning her daughter leaves in darkness,
shoulders a backpack and disappears
into the city for school. 
Sometimes Demeter stands in the room,
touches the warm sheets from which the girl arose,
