SAINT JULIAN PRESS POET
NOW I LEARN
The story about Great Grandfather sailing up the Yangtze: false.
I've found a volume from Oxford University Press, as well as files in the London
Metropolitan Archives setting the record straight. And in a cardboard box
buried in a closet: a blue cloth-bound book my grandfather published in 1958, The House of Dodwell. It's even on
Wikipedia.
William R. Adamson was the man who, in 1852, came back from China
with a ship loaded with silk and the embryo of a fortune. George Benjamin
Dodwell would have been only a year old.
Later, at twenty, he signed on as a clerk in the Shanghai office. By
1899 he'd been elected Chairman of the Board, the company renamed for him.
How did I get this wrong? Had I embellished, exaggerated the tale?
Had Mom? Because it had a more silvery sheen?
