At the altar of the little church,
On a Wednesday, he moved softly,
As if touching a down comforter,
Or a child's cheek in sleep—the white linen,
Candlesticks, the wax of the candles,
The chalice. Where were the people?
They had been here, once, on a late morning,
Somewhat hungover, but, coming into possession
By the place itself, in earnest: I do, I do,
The ritual by which such objects spring to life,
Becoming piece and anchor of those lives. . .
Voyeur, coming back to look, to touch, as if
It could be done again, as if any word
Or touch were good enough, yet knowing
The urgency of the desire here, in this place,
Unseen, not like a child's tale, but an adult's.
