ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH HISTORY
~ Easton, Kansas ~
~ Easton, Kansas ~
St. John Lutheran Church is located northwest of Leavenworth, Kansas, close to the Township of Easton.
In the mid 1860s up through the early 1880s, several German–Lutheran immigrant families settled in the Easton Township area, fifteen miles northwest of Leavenworth, Kansas. Most of the families arrived after the Civil War. There were a few young men who immigrated to America earlier and served in the Union Army during the Civil War, like my great–great–grandfather Federick Wahaus (1840-1923). And after the war settled in Leavenworth county. As new immigrants, most of these families became associated with Saint John Lutheran Church, founded in 1880.
Three Trustees: John Heim, Martin Niemann, and Henry Meinert, helped to organize the church. Heinrich (Henry) Friedrich Wilhelm Meinert (1826-1889) was also my great-great-grandfather. In November 1880, the church purchased land for sixty dollars and received a deed for the new church. Other families in the area who helped found or later became members of the church include: Knollmann, Timpe, Lohmann, Moeller, Markwardt, and Boll.
In the beginning the members met for church services in the home of Frederick Knollman, Sr., and upon occasion in No. 6 schoolhouse. Soon after its formation, each family pledged funds to erect a small church, dedicated to the service of God in June, 1881. Eventually, in 1896 they raised a newer and larger church building that still stands today, where Logan Rd. and the old Potter Rd.(243rdSt.) intersect. On Sunday, August 16, 1896, they dedicated their new house of worship, serving God over the next 122 years and beyond.
We must add here a special thank you to Miriam Suete, who married Robert Suet, and whom wrote this history for a book titled, History of Leavenworth County Kansas, compiled and edited by the Leavenworth County Genealogical Society in May 1990.
