When grief opens a cavern in me
I let the thunder roll there, echo
with the hawk’s cry, the jay’s shriek
until the blue-black sky cracks
and a rain comes heavy falling
until the laboring pines whorl
against the agitated oaks
until the earth grows dark
with wet, until the aquifer fills.
