IN THE PAUSE OF MORNING

​ 
You roll to the edge of the bed and sit quietly
                                                            in the rising light.
 
I was awake before you, remembering
                                                            the first time.
 
I watched you, then, rolling naked
                                                            to the edge.
 
                        I said love died in me. And I wondered if we would couple.
                                                                                                            “Not if, but when,” you said
                                                            and walked straight into my longing.
 
Old ideas fell like shards of a discredited truth.
                        The night convulsed.
 
You made a liar out of me.
 
The past comes to me 
and says what it wants:
a firestone bike, 
a lost girlfriend.
 
They exist only as I dream them
yet the past wants me to stand
outside my mind where the bicycle
 
and the girlfriend still live, 
where the past is a different past 
now that memory shapes it
the way it wants.
 
These images are unruly. 
They change even as I hold them tightly, 
even as I claim what I can
as mine.
