MARRIAGE
I was thinking about marriage. . .
Not in the way we tend to practice it
These days, a little haphazardly,
But as a vocation in which energy,
Converted to mass, converts back
To energy. . .Which I think is what we do
When we pass through death. I always hated
That expression, "passing," because Christian
Scientists used it since "death" was too
Graphic. But, turning to David Sadava's
Life: The Science of Biology, I am touched
Over and over again by his simple
Lovingkindness: "a chemical bond
Is an attractive force that links two atoms
Together in a molecule." "A covalent bond
Forms when two atoms attain stable electron
Numbers in their outermost shells by
Sharing one or more pairs of electrons."
Slowly, over Philip Larkin's eons,
We acquired mass. . .I think about
Becoming a Catholic, my love of the idea
Of "Mass," the Eucharist with its
Transubstantiation, in which matter
Becomes energy becomes—us:
We bond with what now lies
Beyond time, its own gravitational force
Pulling us harder, and harder, through marriage
And back, so many cells already shed, back home.
