On a day when I have had hard news
 
I lie down and listen to the tender voice 
of thunder—familiar, intimate.  
It knew me in a time I can’t remember
 
but my mother told me how she stood
in the edge of a great storm, held me.  
I grew wide-eyed in her arms, rapt
 
she said, in wind-rush and leaf-tremble.
I knew then, we would share a love of this.
 
Now I am weary, heartsick.  My mother is not here
to comfort.  I lie down with the whisper of distant 
thunder, hope it will come near—my dear 
familiar thunder, its song and its caress.
