Last night I held in my arms
The most beautiful thing on earth
Night of a full May moon
When life once more ascends
 
Not joy nor love nor possession
Nor the giving up of passion
Nor the first lie that made this
Neither regretful nor worldly
 
Touched by warm living beauty
Whose curve bent over and rested
Beside me the sleeping breath
Moved on my lips and face
 
Beyond any pattern of minutes
Beyond that invisible wall
When as a heap of dust we are
Dispersed by a friend or lover
 
Last night beauty and goodness
Faultless fruitless generous
Gave itself to my guilty heart
As a window opened on space
 
One indestructible night
Further than human expression
Gentle stable desiring to be
Held before it was lost
