SAINT JULIAN PRESS POET
HARVEST
"The marvelous thing about the horseshoe crab, though, isn't the
color. It's a chemical found only in the amoebocytes of its blood cells
that can detect mere traces of bacterial presence and trap them in
inescapable clot."
−Alexis C. Madrigal
Bled for our tests on coagulation,
living horseshoe crabs are kept by the thousands
in warehouses to gather their ice blue gels.
We pluck them from shallow ocean waters,
we pluck them from the February shore.
Their desire to mate an unshakable spell
to leave strands of salty eggs— their demise.
Hung over glass bottles, tubed, pierced, tied,
drained, the primordial keep us alive.
