TAYVE NEESE
SAINT JULIAN PRESS POET
Athena’s Owl
Athena’s admirer tried not to despise
its gray feathers reluctant for flight.
He imagined its black eyes
a cool well on the hottest nights
of his desire, the water where he drowned.
He tried not to hate the silent raptor,
thought it easy for him to devour,
it having no incisors, knife,
only talons, spotted wings making home
on his beloved’s olive shoulder.
