SAINT JULIAN PRESS
Prosser Stirling ~ Poet
Cowboy Movie
By Tiffany twilight
on a Friday night scramble to the Bijou Drive-In,
where kernels concuss at the popcorn counter,
dancing like dimes in the churning fare box
of the last passing bus,
we pay late for tickets,
panicked puppets in time for entry
to see The Last Picture Show,
and pretend our lives in black and white,
of city pop and country guile,
before chances turn monochrome;
though home is always there
like a broom behind the door, or the dry plains wind
that plows through closing credits.
In blind rush, cars barge the exit;
headlights spear the night
and drive up Roundtop to park,
with sky so close we could pop the stars with pins.
What happens next
gets preserved like film of a western;
lit by dashboard radio dial,
eye whites lay bare
to a caucus of cicada,
fun and tumble dance to a dizzy
to be more than backseat shapes in the dark--
we are comets riding the night,
to crack the brick and dowel of cider-strict porches,
June bug-battered lights still aglow.
The feeling of wanting it all back
is tied in to your teeth,
and you keep waiting
for that bit to bite down on.
