Laura Smyth ~ Poet
Dodo
(extinct ca. 1683)
Prostrate on the horizon
there is a light,
and we bless its rising
like defeated bullies.
We are insincere again today.
But tonight, when the sun buries itself
in the dirt of our skyline,
I will make another entry
in my catalog of past life.
A Dodo is a laughable thing,
but also dead.
From the living room you call its name
laughing at me unwilling to dismember
the chicken carcass
I am nevertheless willing to eat.
Dodo, Didus Ineptus--
what have we to laugh at?
