Night Vision 

​While hart and hare
lay still in their wood, 
the two-toed dung beetle, 
whose radar-domed eyes can see
where rainbows nap at night,
pays no heed
to raccoons under mask 
on midnight haj.
Galloping down the path,
they slow to a ring-tail waddle
as he pushes his parcel to a stop. 
The scarab’s trowels then plow a pit
to roll the booty down.
 
Above, owls gable then dive--
a gentle waft of wing
is all that is heard
as the night widens.
Bashful skunk bears lower noses
to wander and wend their way;
a hangar of fruit bats,
cagey and kicky,
find feeling to fly,
then loiter for turns at nectar.
 
Heavy mosquitos,
high on their hosts, 
stay pooled in loot.
In the fens where ducklings muddle, 
unknown forms cat silently by, 
then mink away with prize. 
 
All let the beetle toil on, 
unaware of his buried treasure, 
passive to his iridescent glow,
the same that rainbows make tonight.
