Wake

I lie awake,
a warden of stone, 
chattel to darkness, 
keeping my bounds 
amid tornadic sheets; 
and acquit quietly 
to half-knowing you, 
but for the involuntary little sounds 
of a body at rest,
and the meter of your breath, 
chaste and tame.
 
It would take more
to know your midnight shifts 
of restless reason,
episodic snorts 
that flare the air
in dialogue with wolves, 
and by morning, 
an overhead arm framing your head in cameo--
still life of ecstasy 
by drowning in dreams,
come weal or come woe.
 
In the same way your hair
un-summers through September, 
our silent sides will turn about; 
two tiger stripes alike,
guarding their parallel, 
as I stalk the second half 
of your nature.
