He wanted a chase.
I heard him start to run
and turned to face him.
The morning traffic passed by unconcerned.
“Don’t turn your back on me
I’ll kick your ass.”
Again and again I must explain
“No, Officer, he did not
have an erection.” The law is very specialized,
his gratification is a serious matter.

It’s spring,
the ducks are copulating.
The bald hen struggles again
and again to be less favored,
to go unnoticed. Spring,
the ducks will soon be laying.
Each noisy brood will scatter and take mates.
Tonight my neighbor tried again to kill herself.
She couldn’t remember what she’d waited for--
a lover? A prudent life?
