Chachalaca 
 
Anarchist, rebel, Chachalaca,
the bird websites say
 
you should be three hundred 
miles south, yet here you are
 
screaming in this dandelion bright 
Aspen grove, beside the Jemez River.
 
Look at you, strutting, flitting,
big as a chicken.
 
Did nobody tell you?
This is dove country. 
 
Bushels of grackles 
have been spotted here
 
 along with an occasional 
 posse of geese, but you?
 
This could be some portent
of world disorder, collapse, 
 
avian confusion, or worse,
but Chachalaca, I’m going with lucky.
 
I won’t take your picture, 
or post the date,
 
your GPS coordinates,
or tell a soul about our encounter.
 
There is no explaining our meeting 
here on the back page of the world
 
so far from our usual roosts;
me, on the couch where I curl 
 
with my dog, you, in the lantana 
gardens of the Tamaulipan brush
 
where it’s said 
your raucous morning songs
 
rile everyone, 
even waken the dead.
