Driving at Night
​
If sleep were immediate
I might not notice
time has broken its agreement
to connect one moment with the next.
Shelled in metal
we drive a narrow line through
the windshield’s clutter.
A possum crosses at the bend,
red eyes flash and its whole body
arches, unhooks. I turn from him
and am again a child
fallen against the step,
my blood not felt until it is seen.
​Rivers are less determined
than that dark stream along my shin.
